specializes in helping business owners navigate the ever-changing
laws, rules, regulations and general pitfalls of having employees in
today's workplace. The stress of owning a business can, at times,
seem overwhelming. However, here a few tips for you to consider that
should help you better deal with one of the biggest concerns
currently facing executives: the hiring and retaining of the best
employees.

- Use behavioral profiles and assessments.
The typical American business bases 80% of their hiring on the
"intellectual" aspect of the person - that is, resume, skills,
training, and experience. Yet 85% of turnover is due to behavior
or style incompatibility - the individual could perform the job,
but for some reason, it was not getting done. These startling
findings emphasize the importance of focusing on behavioral
style analysis and training. The cost of administering these
profiles is extremely small when compared to the cost of
turnover. This analysis is also extremely useful for assessing
existing employees' performance and task suitability.
- Show compassion to exiting employees.
Many business owners fail to recognize the ill will created when
they must discharge employees. Along with a severance check,
many of my clients provide a very cost-effective, in-home
seminar on CD that helps the discharged employee find a new
position more quickly. Not only will remaining employees feel
better, the company will gain an improved image, reduced
unemployment liabilities and, possibly, fewer lawsuits. Finally,
DO NOT terminate via e-mail. My research indicates this method
is currently on the upswing.
- Reward new hires when they approach the end
of the "learning curve". Many companies and managers do
not realize when a new hire has reached the level of a seasoned
employee. This may cause the new hire to become dissatisfied and
seek other employment. Don't put yourself in that position.
Track the new hire's performance and reward accordingly. Many
smaller businesses are delinquent in employee reviews.
Maintaining a rigid schedule of employee reviews (every six
months, if possible) will reduce this liability tremendously.
- Have a drug free workplace. In a
recent study, HR professionals listed substance abuse in the
workplace as their number one concern. An effective program will
consist of pre- and post-employment drug testing. Besides
traditional drug testing methods, a company may now utilize
surface assessment technology. These tests can be performed
without disrupting workflow or confronting an employee. They are
99% accurate and the results will help you determine if you face
a problem that requires additional action.
- Outsource your Human Resources. If
your company has less than 100 employees, this is essential. If
you have more than 100 employees, it's certainly something worth
looking into. Phoenix Arizona HR outsourcing has dozens of
advantages and will reduce the stress of owning your own
business and having employees. As regards to hiring and
retention, Phoenix Arizona HR outsourcing allows companies to
provide, cost-effectively, the type and scope of benefits that,
typically, only very large companies can provide. If you want to
get, and retain, the very best employees, hire an Phoenix Area
HR outsourcer to administer your benefits (and everything else
HR). Your employees will be contented and you'll have more time
to tend to your core business.
